While some dogs love to swim, others have drowned in pools. A prospective dog adopter who has a pool on the property will need to keep the pool securely fenced off and when not in use, covered with a sturdy pool cover. Also, there need to be graded steps out of the pool, not just a ladder. If a dog falls in, he will soon tire and drown, so the pool needs little cement steps the dog can take to safety. Adopters who have a pool -- or who take their dogs to pools or watering holes -- should enter the pool with their dog and carefully train the dog how to get out of the pool.
