Foster

Both long and short term fostering opportunities are available.

Why Foster?

Why Foster?

The best way to help save lives is by fostering. Fostering dramatically increases how many dogs and cats can be rescued each year. Which is why we need more fosters – so we can save more lives! Please consider applying to be a foster today, it’s the biggest contribution you can make!

What PAW Provides

What PAW Provides

PAW will support the foster every step of the way. We provide all veterinary care, supplies as needed including food, crate, ID tag, collar, leash, toys, chews, litter box, and travel carrier. We have an experienced in-house team as well as professional trainers available to help with behavior problems and training. We work diligently to promote the animal for adoption. Vacation relief is provided either in a kennel or with a short-term foster.

Short Term Fostering

Short Term Fostering

Short term fostering gives you the joy of caring for a dog for a two-week period. Short-term fostering allows PAW to get animals out of shelters quickly and into a home while we find their long-term placement. It is a great way to help rescue without a long-term commitment and if you decide you want to adopt you are first in line.

Long Term Fostering

Long Term Fostering

Long term fostering means you keep the animal until they are adopted. This can happen very quickly or take some time. Of course, if the animal is not a good fit for your home we will find them another placement. When fostering a dog, we ask that you take them to two adoption shows a month as well as regular veterinary appointments.

Duties of the Foster

Duties of the Foster

The foster provides daily care for the animal including training and a safe and happy home environment. The caregiver helps to get the animal adopted by talking to applicants, doing meet and greets, and providing pictures and videos. If you cannot attend a show or event you need to make the animal available for volunteers to pick up and drop off at your home. The caregiver must follow PAW’s procedures for adoption, for getting veterinary care, and for providing appropriate care.

Why Foster Instead of Having a Shelter?

The animal lives in a home environment where they can feel safe and comfortable.

The foster caregiver can give plenty of attention to the fostered pet, and watch for problems with illness or behavior.

The foster caregiver can judge the needs and behavior of the individual animal - how they behave around other pets, adults, and children, how much space and exercise they need, what kind of permanent home would be best for them.

Fill out the application form for cats or dogs, as appropriate.

After we receive your application we will do a vet check and a home visit, just as we do for adoption applications. If approved, you will be asked to sign a Foster Agreement agreeing to abide by PAW’s procedures and rules.
